When did you start playing guitar?
I started playing guitar at 10 years old.
What was your first guitar?
My first guitar was an Honor acoustic.
What bands have we seen you in?
Currently We The Ghost. Prior to that The Holding, Shorelines End (Mercury / Island / Def Jam), Rescue Signals (Rock Ridge Music / Warner Music Group), Upside (Tribunal Records).
Who is your Guitar Hero?
My biggest influence on the way I play would probably be Ben Mosier of the band Upside. We played together, but I’ve never learned so much from anyone else. He has the smoothest left hand of any guitarist I’ve ever watched.
What is the first song you ever learned to play?
The first songs I learned to play were“December” by Collective Soul and “All Apologies” by Nirvana.
I’ve received a few awards such as best lyric from “American Songwriter Magazine.” But I have never pushed or campaigned for any awards. It has always seemed very counterproductive to me. It’s hard to be your best if you’re trying to be accepted. I’m not one to preach against success. I want to be as successful as possible, but finding the right motivation has always been very important to me.
What’s your patented stage move?Probably leaning so far back that it looks like I’m breaking my back…. Or licking my guitar…. Kidding…ish
What elements describe your approach to playing?
I believe that it is a mature musicians job to play for the song and NOT themselves. I listen to the song and I let it speak to me. I let it tell me what to do. My job is to compliment the vocal and the song as a whole. I’m a big believer in staying out of the singers way…. But still knowing when to knock him off the stage… tastefully of course lol
Tell us about the best show you ever played
We’ve played a lot of huge shows, some for thousands of people who it felt like we had in the palm of our hand from start to finish. But nothing compares to the first time I ever stepped onto stage in front of a large crowd. In 2005, an old band I was in called Utica had been personally selected by a local radio station and My Chemical Romance to open up for them at a hometown venue in Dallas. It was about 1000+ screaming kids packed wall to wall and going nuts!!! I remember my heart racing so hard that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I still love playing, and I still get a rush, but I never get nervous anymore. I really miss that roller coaster feeling.
What is your favorite food and/or recipe?
Sushi, Mazzio’s Pizza, and In-n-Out burger in So. Cal.
What quote best describes you or is a mantra for your life?
“Shut up and play the damn song!" That and… “I came with a brunette and left with a blonde.” That’s not so much a quote… as my disease LOL.
