More About Me

What do you drive?
Whatever runs.

What do you drink?
Beer

When did you start playing guitar?
16

What was your first guitar?
A really ugly, really inexpensive Yamaha.

Who is your Guitar Hero?
Today I’ll say Chet Atkins.

What is the first song you ever learned to play?
“Universal Corner”, by X.

What music-related awards or accolades have you received, if any?
The Utters won a couple of Bammies (Bay Area Music Awards), one for Best Debut Record, and one for Best Punk Band.

What’s your patented stage move?
Not looking at anyone/anything in particular, and bobbing the head… repeat ad nauseam.

What elements describe your approach to playing?
I try not to do anything half-assed, and am totally convinced that a really good guitar lead is sort of a lost art, especially in punk rock. There are too many wanky dudes out there. I’m trying really hard to not be one of them.

Tell us about the best show you ever played.
I’d say one of the first shows we played in Japan, in Tokyo. The crowd would freak out while we were playing, totally out of control and into it, then after the song was over they would be completely silent. I think they were just kind of showing us some sort of respect. It was really a bit overwhelming, just how foreign a reaction that was to us, and we loved it, and never forgot it. We had amazing crowds in Japan for the whole 2 weeks we were there, but I think the first couple of shows in Tokyo pretty much take the cake.

What is your favorite food and/or recipe?
I hate to say it but I think my favorite food is Lobster. And Steak. Maybe Lobster and a medium rare Ribeye. That sounds good to me. The recipe? Boil the Lobster, grill the steak. Easy!

What quote best describes you or is a mantra for your life?
“A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.”
-Nietzsche
